Cambio & Cabo cheat sheet

2 to 6 players · a normal 52-card deck (Cambio adds the two Jokers) · lowest score wins

Setting up

  1. Deal 4 cards face down to each player, in a 2-by-2 square. Never pick them up or move them.
  2. Rest of the deck face down in the middle; turn the top card up to start the discard pile.
  3. Look at your 2 nearest cards once, then turn them back over.

Your turn

  1. Draw the top card of the deck. Only you look at it.
  2. Swap it for one of your cards (the old card goes face up on the discard pile), or discard it.
  3. Discarded a power card straight from the deck? You may use its power.
  4. Or, instead of drawing: take the top discard and swap it in (no power; Cabo, and Cambio in some groups), or call.

Power cards

Sticking (slamming)

Cambio: whenever a card lands on the discard pile, anyone, at any time, can throw a card of the same rank onto it, from any hand. First one counts.

  • Your card: it's gone. One card fewer.
  • Someone else's: give them one of your cards, face down.
  • Wrong: the card goes back and you take 1 penalty card.

Cabo: no sticking. On your turn you can swap 2 or more cards of the same number for the one new card. Wrong? Show them, put them back, discard the new card, turn over.

Calling and scoring

  • At the start of your turn, instead of drawing, call "Cambio!" or "Cabo!". Not on the first round of turns.
  • Everyone else has one more turn, then all cards are turned up and counted.
  • Cambio: lowest total wins the round. No penalty for a failed call, but a tie goes against the caller (some groups: +10 if not lowest).
  • Cabo: lowest hand scores 0. Caller not lowest: hand +5 (second edition +10). The caller wins ties.
  • Keep a running total. Past 100, the game ends: lowest total wins.
